Fun at Southern California Online Academy

PictureAunt Joanna and Les at the SCOA Fall Festival
BRICK participated in the Southern California Online Academy (SCOA) Fall Festival.

Les and his cousin Jazzy both attend this hybrid charter school in Lake Elsinore, CA.  They do the majority of their work at home with online curriculum and then they also go to campus for learning clinics, science labs, and individual one-on-one time with their teachers, including special ed and speech.  It is working out very nicely for both families.

The Fall Festival was a time for the students to hang out, play games, eat from food trucks, and support our PTA.  BRICK raised awareness for pediatric brain tumors by passing out information postcards and rubber Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego bracelets.  We also had some items for sale and a donation jar.  Thank you SCOA for supporting BRICK!

BRICKshoppe is an online Etsy shop selling items handmade by members of BRICK.  We have watercolors painted by Great-Grandma Laura and washcloths and a scarf knitted by Cecillia as well as some items sewn by Grandma Sue.  100% of the profits will go toward brain tumor research at Rady Children's Hospital.  www.brickshoppe.etsy.com

Also, we have created a way for other Etsy shop owners to join our fund raising efforts.  It's called "Team BRICK".  Any shop owner is welcome to tag one or more of their items with the "Team BRICK" tag and then promise to donate a portion of that sale to BRICK.  After the tagged item sells, they would come to our BRICK website and click the "Donate Online" button.  BRICK will promote the Etsy "Team BRICK" tag and encourage people to use it when searching on Etsy.  The search will bring up any and all items on Etsy with that tag.

If you have an Etsy shop please join "Team BRICK" with one or more of your items.  If you know of someone who owns an Esty shop, please share this information with them.

BRICK was invited to have a Sponsor booth at the Over the Edge for Brain Cancer this past Sunday (Nov. 3, 2013).  The event was raising money for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (abc2.org).

"Edgers" had to raise a minimum of $1,500 in order to qualify to rappel 365 feet down the side of the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.  They raised over $150,000 and all the money is staying here in San Diego (UCSD) to used for innovative brain tumor research.

BRICK had the opportunity to increase the awareness of the need for pediatric specific brain tumor research as well as the collaborative relationships that Rady Children's has with UCSD.

Team BRICK (Brain Research In Cancer Kids) is accepting walkers for the Shamu and You Family Walk.  Team BRICK has designated the Brain Tumor Research fund at Rady Children's Hospital to receive all of its team member donations.

We are encouraging everyone to register as a walker on the team.  100% of the registration fees go to the Brain Tumor Research fund.  If you can't attend the event, then you can sign up as a "virtual walker".  All registered walkers can then go out and get sponsors - thus increasing the total raised for Team BRICK and Brain Tumor Research.  The challenge is for each walker to ask 10 people to sponsor them at $10 each.  There are prizes to be earned for those who raise certain dollar amounts.

If you would like to support Team BRICK, but do not want to register as a walker, then you can sponsor a walker on the team. Click here and then select a walker from the list to sponsor.

BRICK has pledged to raise $30,000 by 2016 and recruiting walkers and sponsors for our team is one of our funding sources.

Shamu & You Family Walk is an annual fund-raiser put on by Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego at SeaWorld.  All entry fees and donations benefit Rady Children's Hospital.  The BRICK-Brain Research In Cancer Kids team has designated the Brain Tumor Research fund at Rady Children's to receive 100% of its team member entry fees and donations.

The BRICK-Brain Research In Cancer Kids team raised over $1,000!

This year's walk was fabulous.  Les's and Oliver's family and friends along with Dr. John Crawford formed the BRICK-Brain Research In Cancer Kids team this year.  We strolled through SeaWorld and saw many animal ambassadors.  The main part of the walk was a one mile loop through SeaWorld.  A few of the BRICK team continued walking along Mission Bay for 3 more miles.  Back at the Start/Finish line after the walk there were many booths with free food and give-aways.  It was a fun morning.  See more photos on our webpage - 2012 Shamu & You Family Walk at SeaWorld.

Last year's walk was fabulous.  We strolled through SeaWorld and saw many animals out with their handlers.  The main part of the walk is a one mile loop through SeaWorld bringing you back to the Start/Finish line.  For those who wish, you can continue walking along Mission Bay for 3 more miles - finishing back at the Start/Finish line.  The entire 4 miles is wheelchair/stroller friendly.  At the Start/Finish line after the walk there are many booths with free food and give-aways.  It's a fun morning.

How you can get involved
We are encouraging everyone to register as a walker on the team.  100% of the registration fees go to the Brain Tumor Research fund.  If you can't attend the event, then you can sign up as a "virtual walker".  All registered walkers can then go out and get sponsors - thus increasing the total raised for the team and Brain Tumor Research.  The challenge is for each walker to ask 10 people to sponsor them at $10 each.  There are prizes to be earned for those who raise certain dollar amounts.

If you would like to support our team, but do not want to register as a walker, then you can still sponsor someone else who is a walker on the team.  - Instructions below.

BRICK has pledged to raise $30,000 over the next five years and recruiting walkers and sponsors for our team is one of our funding sources.  If you want to sponsor a walker and support BRICK's goal, then any member of the Fountain family would be happy to receive your donation.  Cecillia, Jason, and Les Fountain each have a goal to raise $500 to earn the SeaWorld Silver Passport prizes.

Support a walker on our team
Click the button below and the BRICK team website will open (http://shamuandyouwalk.kintera.org/brickteam).  To join our team, click "Join Our Team" link below the heading and go through the steps to register.  Each participant needs to register (and pay) separately.  To support a walker on the BRICK team, you can select a name from the list of team members and their Personal Fundraising Page will come up with a place to enter your donation.  During the process you can choose to display your name and/or amount or remain anonymous on the website display.

Thank You for supporting BRICK and our efforts to raise money for Brain Tumor Research at Rady Children's.
